At The White Room, we’ve been building websites and digital applications since 2010; since then, we have gained a great amount of knowledge and experience. We put together this FAQ page to answer the most common questions we have been asked. Any questions you may have, chances are they have been already asked before!
What is a domain name?
A domain name, also called URL, is your address on the internet. Typically, it’s something like yourcompanyname.com.au
What is web hosting?
Web hosting is where you store the files that make your website. Basically, it’s the physical location of your website on the Internet: a computer housed in a data centre (called server) that runs your website and email.
Do I need my own domain name and web hosting?
Yes, you need both these elements. We can help you to set these up or we can work with your existing provider. Please remember that it’s always a good idea to have full ownership of your web domain (i.e. you register under your name and you have the necessary login). If you have a domain name but not web hosting, we can host your site for you.
Will my website work on mobile devices?
You bet! All the websites we design work on all devices (laptop, tablet, smartphone), browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, MS Edge, etc.), and operating systems (Android, iOS). It’s called “responsive design”.
What is a Content Management System (CMS)?
A Content Management System is an online tool that allows you to manage the pages of your website yourself, without needing any technical skills. A CMS allows you to edit and add pages, images, products or blog entries to your website. You will only need a web browser and an internet connection – don’t worry if you need some initial guidance, that’s why we are here.
What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?
Search Engine Optimisation is the process of increasing quantity and quality of traffic to your website without paying for such traffic (we call it “organic” or “natural” traffic). The aim is to get your website higher up in the search results on search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo) so you are more likely to get more customers.
There are many factors that contribute to good SEO, however there are two moments when all these optimisations happen: before the site is launched (on-page SEO) and afterwards (on-going SEO). On-page SEO covers lots of factors (from keywords to title tags, from headings to links, and many more) and at The White Room we always include this in the scope of the new website. Ongoing SEO, as its name suggests, is not a one-off and as such it needs periodic revisions and improvements, which we are happy to offer as an extra service.
What is Search Engine Marketing (SEM)?
Search Engine Marketing is the process that involves the promotion of a website by increasing visibility mainly through paid advertising. Compared to SEO, SEM requires less time to achieve visibility for a website, however as soon as you stop paying, your site will drop position on Google and other search engines. A combination of SEO and SEM is always recommended, especially because a site with a good SEO will make the most of its SEM budget.
How much does a website cost?
The cost of a website depends on many factors and it may vary sensibly. This is similar to asking “how much does a car cost?” – it depends on what you’re after. Our website projects start from $5,000 for basic business sites and move upward depending on your specific business needs.
How long does it take to design and build a website?
Again, it depends – the required time may vary sensibly depending on the website’s size and complexity. Content availability also plays a big role in this. A basic website typically takes around 4 weeks from beginning to end, which may not be enough for more complex sites.
Do you provide training?
We always provide all our clients with training on managing their websites, preferably before handover.
Can you help me with Social Media and Email Marketing?
Yes, absolutely. We always recommend to include social media and email marketing in your website project, in order to achieve your business objectives.
